Financial function · cross-asset research

Payments & stablecoins

Payment infrastructure moves or settles monetary claims. Stablecoins can supply the cash leg, but circulating balances, gross transfers, customer payments and settlement are different measurements. The stablecoin issuer and the network’s native token are also different economic objects.

Why this function matters

Financial adoption depends on usable cash access, payout and settlement pathways. Native-token benefit depends on the fees, inventory or acquisition required by those pathways, rather than the dollars transferred alone.

These are selected materially relevant cases, not a ranking or an exhaustive institutional activity total.

Ethereum / ETH

Live scaled production · Evidence date: through 25 September 2026

Provider methodologies placed Ethereum stablecoin value around $147B–$160B at the cutoff.

Not proven: Raw gross transfer volume is not equivalent to economic payments, and stablecoin principal does not create proportional ETH requirements.

ETH-STABLECOIN-CAPITAL-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

The rollup-and-capacity strategy lets Ethereum scale while weakening the activity → congestion → burn → scarcity loop. ETH can benefit through security capital and monetary/reserve preference; the missing guarantee is that financial-system growth causes proportionate persistent ETH ownership.

Primary bypass

Ethereum succeeds as capital and settlement infrastructure while L2s retain execution economics, data capacity stays cheap, paymasters hide ETH and stablecoins remain user-facing money. High-value low-frequency funds can add enormous principal with little gas. If collateral/security balances and external ownership do not keep pace, network importance outruns token demand.

Solana / SOL

Live production · Evidence date: live production / ongoing

Visa has used Solana for USDC settlement.

Not proven: Solana-exclusive settlement, current attributable settlement volume or material SOL balance demand.

SOL-VISA-USDC-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

SOL is mandatory for backend fees and stake-weighted security. Its stronger balance channels are staking and voluntary fund/treasury ownership, reinforced by liquid network-proxy demand. Current burn is weak relative to positive issuance; fee-light sponsored finance can scale without proportional end-user SOL holdings.

Primary bypass

Useful low-cost Solana finance can grow while direct burn remains small, sponsors recycle fee balances, and issuance offsets scarcity. Institutional activity may choose competing or multichain rails; app/operator economics are not token-holder rights.

Stellar / XLM

Live scaled production · Evidence date: 2026

MoneyGram launched native MGUSD on Stellar and remains a major payments/cash-access partner; it also became explicitly multichain through Tempo and Solana.

Not proven: that MoneyGram network volume is predominantly Stellar or that the relationship is exclusive.

XLM-MONEYGRAM-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

XLM fees, rent and account/subentry reserves are mandatory but small and linked to ledger complexity rather than asset dollars. Sponsorship shifts the reserve bearer. There is no proof-of-stake sink; large voluntary XLM supply in lending mostly demonstrates holder inventory, not borrower-driven scarcity. Important catalysts can still reach XLM through a separate, conditionally supported market-proxy path.

Primary bypass

Regulated assets and payments can grow with small recycled/sponsored XLM costs while principal stays in issued assets. Major counterparties including MoneyGram and DTCC are multichain; important network selection is not exclusive token capture. RWA reuse remains emerging and not proportional to asset issuance.

XRP Ledger / XRP

Live scaled production · Evidence date: September 2026

RLUSD is a material multichain stablecoin used across Ripple's payments, custody, Prime, tokenized-asset and distribution stack; Ripple reported roughly $2.396B circulating at the September transparency snapshot.

Dated research scope / source limitation · September 2026 Historical measurement limitation: the approximately $2.396B amount is the frozen September research snapshot, not a currently verified balance. Live multichain RLUSD architecture remains evidenced. Current issuer transparency does not reproduce that historical input; global supply is not XRPL-specific supply, XRP bridge flow or material XRP demand. Canonical Stage, Tier and Lifecycle are research classifications retained from the accepted Ledger; this notice is not new source verification.

Not proven: proportion on XRPL or material RLUSD-driven XRP demand.

XRP-RLUSD-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

Ripple has assembled an unusually complete institutional-finance capability stack, and XRPL is being developed as a settlement, tokenization, liquidity and collateral rail. XRP’s strongest established transmission is market-proxy demand and independent inventory channels; proportional utility-driven acquisition remains poorly quantified. Ripple and XRPL can grow while XRP remains optional for much of the principal economic flow.

Primary bypass

Ripple can succeed without XRPL. XRPL can succeed without material XRP principal use. XRP use can occur without new external purchases.

Principal value may flow through RLUSD, tokenized securities, direct issued-asset pairs, conventional settlement and offchain custody. Required XRP can come from existing balances, contributions, leases or recycled liquidity.

Sui / SUI

Live production · Evidence date: 2026

Daya independently supports Sui as a live stablecoin settlement rail and explicitly abstracts the network token from users.

Not proven: Sui-specific payment volume.

SUI-DAYA-PAYMENTS-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

SUI has real gas, stake and storage roles plus unusually strong regulated/treasury access and market-proxy transmission. Supported gasless transfers and app-layer tokens weaken required user-held balances. Staking can use existing/noncirculating inventory and rewards remain subsidy-supported.

Primary bypass

Daya explicitly allows settlement without buying or holding SUI. Gas sponsorship, stablecoin principal and DEEP/app-token economics can deliver valuable Sui usage while required external SUI acquisition stays weak. Foundation inventory can satisfy strategic demand without equivalent open-market buying.

Sky / SKY

Live scaled production · Evidence date: September 2026

synchronized view showed ~$1.75B free USDS, ~$4.67B sUSDS, ~$209M stUSDS, ~$4.58B circulating DAI and ~$203M DAI savings; methodologies differ from the later ~$9.85B combined top-level view.

Not proven: complete funding stickiness or one interchangeable definition of supply.

SKY-USDS-FUNDING-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

Current policy directs 22% of original Net Revenue into outside-market SKY purchases: 18% for staking rewards and 4% for purchase-and-burn. Actual market acquisition and permanent destruction are verified. This is a current capture system, but most purchased SKY can later be distributed and sold; holders have no fixed profit claim.

Primary bypass

The financial system can remain operating while lower yields, mobile funding, credit losses and reserve rebuilding divert surplus from SKY acquisition. Agents can retain some economics and governance can redirect the waterfall. Protocol survival therefore does not guarantee strong token economics.

System adoption, token capture and market exposure

Solana’s Visa USDC settlement and Stellar’s MoneyGram pathway are specific payment-production observations. Ethereum stablecoin balances measure capital stock, not a payment-volume claim. Sui’s Daya production establishes a settlement service while allowing users to avoid buying or holding SUI. Different observations cannot be added into a single payment-adoption total.

Ripple/RLUSD and Sky/USDS show why stablecoin economics need their own boundary. RLUSD reserve economics belong to the issuer and do not become an XRP-holder entitlement. Sky’s savings-funded book and retained economics support a different route into policy-directed SKY acquisition. Savings funding is not proof of merchant-payment adoption, and neither token grants a fixed issuer-profit claim.

Cheap fees, gas sponsorship, existing balances and multichain distribution can let financial activity grow while persistent end-user native-token inventory stays small. Token ownership or market-proxy demand is a separate channel from the stablecoin principal and the issuer’s economics.
