Crypto token value capture

Understand gas, burn, security, collateral and acquisition channels without equating token use with durable holder benefit.

What Economic Capture measures

Economic Capture asks whether valuable system activity creates native-token demand, persistent inventory, locking, burn, collateral/security demand or other durable economics. It considers both the architecture and what is operating now.

Mandatory coupling alone is insufficient. Economic intensity, outside funding, inventory duration, persistence, bypass resistance and policy reversibility matter. A payment in tokens can be supplied from existing holdings and sold again by the recipient.

Different mechanisms, different limits

Gas and burn: required fees can create a real route, but low fees, cheap capacity and subsidies can keep the absolute effect small. Security staking: balances may be committed temporarily, while rewards add seller-capable flow. Collateral and reserve inventory: balances can persist, but recursive reuse, liquid representations or existing ownership qualify fresh demand.

Required liquidity and bridge balances can recycle quickly. Revenue-funded acquisition can buy outside-market tokens, but buying is not automatically burn, permanent removal or a holder cash-flow right. Separate externally funded purchases from internal distributions, token financing and already-owned inventory.

Trace funding and disposition

Identify what funds acquisition, who receives tokens, whether balances remain mobile and who can reverse future policy. Net scarcity cannot be inferred from gross purchases or burn alone when issuance, releases and other mobile inventory remain.

The same burn/buyback channel must not be rewarded again as favorable Supply. Supply Burden separately records seller-capable flow, strategic inventory and release authority.

Real asset cases

Hyperliquid / HYPE

Live scaled production · Evidence date: September 2026

qualifying fees are automatically converted into HYPE; AF HYPE is treated as permanently removed from circulating/economic total supply under current protocol design.

Not proven: immutable future policy or complete equivalence to legal destruction.

HYPE-ASSISTANCE-FUND-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

Hyperliquid has a large, real fee-paying trading engine. Qualifying protocol fees automatically acquire HYPE, and Assistance Fund balances are currently treated as economic burn. That is unusually direct token capture, not a legal pro-rata revenue claim.

Primary bypass

Hyperliquid grows through lower-fee HIP-3/backend activity while capture per dollar falls. Higher HYPE prices remove fewer tokens per captured dollar; staking rewards and contributor/Foundation principal become marketable; discretionary treasury demand weakens. Excellent exchange performance can coexist with deteriorating token economics.

Maple Finance / SYRUP

Live production · Evidence date: September 2026

bought-back SYRUP remains in SSF; Maple reported ~78.32M SYRUP in SSF at cutoff.

Not proven: permanent lockup or future non-sale/non-redeployment.

SYRUP-SSF-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

Revenue-funded external SYRUP buying is real under temporary MIP-021, but acquired tokens stay in the Syrup Strategic Fund. They are not burned or proven permanently unavailable. Ordinary lending and syrupUSD use need no SYRUP. Organizational alignment reduces outside-equity leakage without creating a legal holder cash-flow right.

Primary bypass

Maple can grow its managed book and retain economics without mandatory SYRUP usage. Governance can let MIP-021 expire, divert revenue to operations or redeploy purchased SSF inventory. The aligned Foundation ecosystem narrows one private-equity bypass but does not make SYRUP equity.

Ethereum / ETH

Live scaled production · Evidence date: through 25 September 2026

ETH, WETH and ETH-derived assets support large collateral, borrowing and liquidation markets across Mainnet and L2s.

Not proven: Gross collateral exposure represents unique ETH demand because recursive reuse occurs.

ETH-COLLATERAL-01
Accepted token thesis and primary bypass

Token thesis

Ethereum is deeply embedded financial infrastructure with exceptional capital, settlement, security, liquidity and institutional production. ETH has substantial live demand, but its strongest current channels are security, collateral and persistent balance-sheet ownership—not proportional consumption by transactions.

Primary bypass

Ethereum succeeds as capital and settlement infrastructure while L2s retain execution economics, data capacity stays cheap, paymasters hide ETH and stablecoins remain user-facing money. High-value low-frequency funds can add enormous principal with little gas. If collateral/security balances and external ownership do not keep pace, network importance outruns token demand.
